Resistance Theology: #FergusonToNewYork

Peace Family!

We are writing to ask our friends and family, who are willing and able, to support our mission to join the liberation struggles of Oppressed Persons, specifically, to support our mission to contribute our heart, mind, body, and spirit to grassroots Black and Brown liberation groups.

Daniel is a budding Resistance theologian, scholar, activist, and agitator with a special passion for the liberation of Black and Brown ghettos and barrios.

Yasmine is a budding Muslim theologian, scholar, activist, and agitator with a special passion for the liberation of Palestine.

Together, we choose to commit our whole selves to whatever radical work is being done by those groups and individuals who experience the brunt of systemic oppression on a regular basis.

As such, we plan to leave for Ferguson on July 28, 2015 and to return to New York around September 1, 2015.

Some of our work in Ferguson/STL will include supporting local, Justice for Mike Brown, groups that are working on a National Call to Ferguson for the one year anniversary of the murder of Mike Brown and the Resurrection of a Global Movement!

Additionally, we will work to strengthen ties between Radical Faith Communities of Resistance from #FergusonToNewYork.

**In no way do we want to take away donations that would have otherwise gone to supporting local grassroots organizations that are fighting for the liberation of Black and Brown Peoples. So please, only support us financially if you believe in our ability to do good work supporting the Movement in Ferguson/STL.**

Below is a rough breakdown of our expected expenses related to this trip:

  • Round trip, Ferguson to New York for two ≈ $600
  • Supplemental food for two (≈ 40 days x $15/day) ≈ $600
  • Transportation (local), including two monthly passes (2 x $78) + misc. ($100) ≈ $256
  • Updating software, subscriptions, and hardware for live streaming direct actions, and for disseminating real-time updates from Ferguson via this website and social media ≈ $400

If we could raise $1800 for our work, we would be eternally grateful to all of you! Detailed updates will be emailed to contributors and also posted on this blog.

Peace,
Danny and Yasmine

WHAT:

Global Solidarity Actions with Faith in Ferguson #FightBack365

With the one year anniversary of the murder of Michael Brown and the flashpoint of the Ferguson Rebellion fast approaching, the Ferguson Action Council has been working hard issuing a national call for faith solidarity and participation in events and actions occurring August 7th-10.

In St. Louis/Ferguson there will be a variety of disruptions, marches, concerts, acts of civil disobedience, and panel discussions to reflect upon where the Movement is this year, and where we are going.

The actions will include a Moral Monday action on August 10th, with a special call for clergy and religious leaders to come to St. Louis. **Coming to St. Louis/Ferguson means you need to be prepared to be arrested, because of the arbitrary nature of policing combined with the tendency of police to overreact at predominantly Black-led protests.

If you cannot come to St. Louis/Ferguson, Faith in Ferguson is calling on clergy and religious leaders, in particular, to participate in actions, events, and services with your faith communities, to support local Black Lives Matters chapters and others who have been doing the work of organizing against anti-Black state violence.

WHEN:

August 7th, 2015 to August 10th, 2015

WHY:

August 9th marks the 365th day of continuous resistance by the People in the streets of Ferguson. The Ferguson Movement is a multi-gendered, multiracial Movement for Black Lives being led by poor and working class, Black, mostly women, both in the streets and in the public intellectual discourse.

HOW:

Submit your faith solidarity action by clicking HERE and filling out the form. Events in Ferguson will not be publicized until the week of actions. All faith solidarity actions, events, services, etc., will be publicized and shared widely.

NYPD Refuse to Provide Name and Badge Number of Arresting Officers at Eric Garner Protest (2015)

Two protesters were arrested during a nonviolent protest, on July 17, 2015. The officers, including several high ranking ones, abused their authority by refusing to provide citizens with their names and badge numbers.

One officer even proclaims, “we’re not required to do that,” in response to my request.

According to http://www.nyc.gov/html/ccrb/html/home/home.shtml

“2. Abuse of Authority: this refers to abuse of police powers to intimidate or mistreat a civilian; for example, an officer’s refusal to provide name and badge number…”
